Privacy Policy
Ghar handles money between people who live together, which means it handles things you would not want loose. This page says exactly what we collect, why, where it sits, and how to get rid of it. No hedging.
The short version. We collect what the app needs to split bills and nothing else. We do not sell your data, we do not run advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. Receipt photos are read on your device first, and only leave it if that fails.

What we collect

We do not collect your location, your contacts, your bank logins, or any advertising identifier. Ghar has no analytics SDK and no third-party trackers.
Receipt scanning
When you scan a receipt, the text is read on your phoneusing Apple's built-in text recognition. The photo does not leave your device for that step.
If on-device reading finds nothing usable — a crumpled receipt, a PDF invoice, a bank screenshot — the image is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to be read instead. Anthropic processes it to return the line items and does not train models on it. If you would rather that never happen, enter the expense manually.
Where it is stored
Everything sits in a Supabase project hosted on AWS in Sydney, Australia (ap-southeast-2). Access is enforced row by row in the database: a query can only ever return rows belonging to a house you are currently a member of.
Who processes data for us
- Supabase — database, authentication and receipt storage.
- Anthropic — reading receipts that on-device recognition cannot.
- Resend — sending invitation and account emails.
- Expo — delivering push notifications to your device.
- Apple — app distribution and push delivery on iOS.
What your housemates can see
Everyone in your house can see the expenses, splits, balances, receipt photos, rosters and alerts for that house, along with your name. That is the point of a shared ledger. They cannot see your email address, your password, your notification settings, or anything from a different house.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from House → Security → Delete my account. It is immediate and permanent.
Your sign-in, name and email are erased, your devices are unregistered and your receipt photos are deleted. Expenses you paid for stay in the house's books, listed against a former housemate — because removing them would silently change what everyone else owes. Nobody can work out who you were from what is left.
Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles — and the GDPR if you are in the EEA or UK — you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Deletion is built into the app; for the others, write to privacy@gharapp.co and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
Ghar is not intended for anyone under 16. If you believe a child has an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes
If we change how data is handled in a way that affects you, we will update this page and note it in the app before the change takes effect.
